🛫 Getting to Alberta + Road Trip Tips

We flew from Newark to Calgary via Chicago (returning nonstop on Air Canada) and rented a Chrysler Pacifica — the perfect vehicle for our group of six.
Pro Tip: Pre-register for your rental car pickup to avoid long wait times.
Before hitting the road, we stopped at the Calgary Costco to stock up on snacks for our 9-day adventure.

🌊 Lake Louise: Hikes, Views & Dining

We arrived in Lake Louise mid-afternoon and checked into our hotel. After exploring the lake and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, we had dinner at Lake Louise Inn, which had great food and service.

🚶‍♀️ Lake Agnes Tea House Hike
One of the best things to do in Lake Louise is the hike to Lake Agnes Tea House.
Distance: 4.5 miles round trip
Difficulty: Moderate (steep sections, but doable)
Tip: Take the Parks Canada shuttle — parking lots fill by 8 a.m.
The Tea House serves sandwiches, tea, and light snacks. The hummus and cucumber sandwich was our favorite! Adventurous hikers can continue to the Big Beehive for panoramic views.
Dinner that evening was at The Station Restaurant, a local favorite with hearty, well-made meals.

🏔️ Moraine Lake: Canoeing & Iconic Views
No trip to Alberta is complete without visiting Moraine Lake.
Climb the Rock pile for that postcard-perfect view.
Rent a canoe and paddle across the turquoise lake — the views of the glaciers and waterfalls from the far side are unforgettable.
Access Tip: The only way to get to Moraine Lake is by shuttle or by biking (e-bikes highly recommended).

🚗 Icefields Parkway: The Most Scenic Drive in Canada
The drive from Lake Louise to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. While the route takes 2–2.5 hours nonstop, plan a full day for stops.
Best Stops on the Icefields Parkway:

🦌 Jasper National Park: Wildlife, Hot Springs & Adventure
We arrived in Jasper in the evening and had dinner at The Raven Bistro — one of the best restaurants in town.
🌄 Top Things to Do in Jasper

• Pyramid Lake: Go early to look for elk (sunrise/sunset is best).
  
• Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge: Even if you’re not staying here, stroll the grounds — you might spot elk at dusk.
• Miette Hot Springs: Relax in the hot pools and try a cold plunge for the ultimate refresh.
• Downtown Jasper: Quaint shops, great restaurants, and a friendly vibe.

❄️ Columbia Icefield Adventure & Glacier Skywalk
On the way back toward Banff, we stopped at the Columbia Icefield for the Athabasca Glacier tour.
Board a massive Ice Explorer bus and ride onto the glacier.
Drink fresh glacial water straight from the source.
Experience surreal landscapes — even smoky skies couldn’t ruin the magic.
Nearby, we braved the Glacier Skywalk, a glass walkway over a deep canyon. Even our height-phobic friend conquered her fear (and got amazing photos!).

🏙️ Banff: Where Adventure Meets Comfort
Banff feels like a mountain resort town with endless dining, shopping, and adventure opportunities.
🚍 Getting Around Banff
Banff’s Roam Transit Bus is excellent — we used it to get to the gondola, rafting trips, and other activities.
🏞️ Best Things to Do in Banff

• Banff Gondola: Ride to the summit and walk to the historic weather station for incredible views.
• E-Biking: Scenic trails along the Bow River are perfect for all fitness levels.
• Bow River Float Trip: A relaxing, scenic way to experience Banff — we saw a bull elk and five cows crossing the river!
• Shopping & Dining: Banff has an amazing food scene and great boutiques.

🍴 Recommended Banff Restaurants

• Three Bears Brewery: Excellent pizza, craft beer, and service.
• Magpie & Stump: Fun spot for Mexican food and drinks.
• Anejo: Stylish Mexican restaurant with great cocktails.
• Grizzly House: Cook your own meal on hot rocks — a Banff classic.
• COWS Ice Cream: A must-try (be ready for a line!).
• Fairmont Banff Springs (Rundle Lounge): Elegant lunch or dinner with iconic views.

❤️ What Makes Alberta Special
Yes, the scenery is breathtaking — but what really made our trip special was the people. From servers and shopkeepers to park staff, everyone was friendly and welcoming.
And despite the devastating wildfire that destroyed one-third of Jasper just a year ago, the town’s resilience is inspiring. Nature is healing, and the community spirit is stronger than ever.
