On our recent trip to Tuscany, we chose San Gimignano as our home base due to its central location and proximity to many of the region’s most renowned wineries. From scenic drives through the vineyards to discovering hidden gems in town, every moment felt like an unforgettable adventure

​Wine Tasting and Culinary Delights in Tuscany

Day 1: Exploring Local Wineries
Our first wine experience was at Tenuta Torciano, a renowned winery that offers a wine school where guests can learn the art of wine tasting. After a guided tour of the winery, we enjoyed a multi-course dinner paired with exceptional wines. Tenuta Torciano is one of the largest producers we visited on our trip, with multiple vineyards in Tuscany. We even shipped home bottles of Super Tuscans, Rosé, and Olive Oil to keep the memories alive.
Later that evening, we met a mother-daughter duo from a town just 30 minutes from ours, a small world indeed!

Day 2: Hidden Corners and Local Favorites
On our second day, we explored San Gimignano further, wandering the narrow streets and discovering hidden passages and dirt roads with incredible views of the town. In the afternoon, we visited Campochairenti, a boutique winery run by the passionate vintner David. The personal touch and dedication to quality made this visit unforgettable, and we ended up purchasing more wine and a case of their award-winning Olive Oil.
David also suggested a scenic drive through the vineyard-lined backroads, a stunning route that we’ll always remember.

Dinner in San Gimignano: A Taste of Tuscany
That evening, we dined at Locanda La Mandragola, where we savored decadent mushroom ravioli, tender duck breast, and mouthwatering bronzino. One of the highlights of the evening was connecting with a couple from South Carolina, who were on their honeymoon and making the most of their European adventure.

A Final Winery Visit and A Sweet Treat in San Gimignano
Pietraserena Winery: Behind the Scenes
On our last day in San Gimignano, we visited Pietraserena Winery, located just a few miles from the town center. The winery offers a behind-the-scenes tour, showcasing the entire winemaking process—from grape growing to wine production. The breathtaking views from the winery, overlooking the rolling hills of Tuscany, were the perfect way to wrap up our wine journey.
We left with a couple of bottles of wine to take with us and signed up for their exclusive wine club for future shipments.

Gelato at Gelateria Dondoli: A Sweet Finale
No visit to San Gimignano is complete without trying the world-famous gelato at Gelateria Dondoli. We timed our visit just right, avoiding the usual crowds. The gelato definitely lived up to the hype, and the short wait was well worth it.

San Gimignano Market Day: A Tuscan Tradition
Every Thursday, San Gimignano hosts a lively traveling market in the town’s main squares. From fresh fish and meats to handmade Italian clothing, this market offers a taste of local life. We spent a delightful morning browsing through stalls, purchasing everything from artisanal cheese to stylish leather goods.

Where to Eat in San Gimignano: A Food Lover’s Paradise
Our final dinner in town was at Ristorante Bel Soggiorno, where we enjoyed a fantastic meal with a view. Pro tip: When making reservations, ask for a window table to enjoy the stunning views of the Tuscan hills, especially at sunset. The pistachio ravioli was a standout dish and a perfect end to our culinary journey.

Practical Tips for Visiting San Gimignano
While San Gimignano is accessible by train to Poggibonsi, we highly recommend renting a car to explore the Tuscan countryside. Many of the most scenic routes and charming towns are best accessed by car. Just keep in mind that cars are not allowed within the town’s medieval walls, so park in one of the public lots outside the walls and enjoy a short walk to your accommodation.
For those with limited mobility, be aware that San Gimignano’s steep cobbled streets can be challenging, so it may not be the best destination for travelers with walking difficulties.
