I recently had the incredible opportunity to explore Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s stunning Canary Islands located just off the northwest coast of Africa. To make the adventure even better, my trip included a quick stopover in vibrant Madrid.

First Impressions of Gran Canaria
As soon as you arrive, you notice the island’s contrasting landscapes. The south of Gran Canaria is dry, sunny, and almost desert-like, while the north is greener and more lush. Rising mountains dominate the center of the island—during our stay, we reached elevations of over 6,500 feet!
On the drive from the airport, we passed large white fabric tents covering crops--bananas, potatoes, and tomatoes—shielding them from the island’s nearly year-round sunshine. Interestingly, before the 1960s, tomato exports were Gran Canaria’s main source of income. Today, the island thrives on tourism, welcoming visitors from all over Europe and beyond.

Traveling to a foreign country for the first time can feel daunting and intimidating — but it doesn’t have to be. 🛫 Getting to Alberta + Road Trip Tips

We flew from Newark to Calgary via Chicago (returning nonstop on Air Canada) and rented a Chrysler Pacifica — the perfect vehicle for our group of six.
Pro Tip: Pre-register for your rental car pickup to avoid long wait times.
Before hitting the road, we stopped at the Calgary Costco to stock up on snacks for our 9-day adventure.

🌊 Lake Louise: Hikes, Views & Dining

We arrived in Lake Louise mid-afternoon and checked into our hotel. After exploring the lake and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, we had dinner at Lake Louise Inn, which had great food and service.

🚶‍♀️ Lake Agnes Tea House Hike
One of the best things to do in Lake Louise is the hike to Lake Agnes Tea House.
Distance: 4.5 miles round trip
Difficulty: Moderate (steep sections, but doable)
Tip: Take the Parks Canada shuttle — parking lots fill by 8 a.m.
The Tea House serves sandwiches, tea, and light snacks. The hummus and cucumber sandwich was our favorite! Adventurous hikers can continue to the Big Beehive for panoramic views.
Dinner that evening was at The Station Restaurant, a local favorite with hearty, well-made meals.

Travel is never just about the miles on the road — it’s about the stories, the laughter, and the moments that become family legends. For us, Ireland was more than a vacation. It was healing, a chance to celebrate milestones, and an opportunity to reconnect after life’s curveballs.
We planned a 7-day Ireland road trip that would take us from the lively streets of Dublin to the wild beauty of Connemara, along the windswept Cliffs of Moher, through the rolling green of the Dingle Peninsula and Ring of Kerry, and ending with castles, whiskey, and coastal charm in Kinsale and Cork.
Along the way, we sang karaoke, sampled whiskey, kissed the Blarney Stone, argued with Irish weather (spoiler: weather always wins), and made the kind of memories you can’t plan for. This guide is both our family story and a practical Ireland itinerary — complete with tips, must-sees, and food stops that made our week unforgettable.

Day 1: Dublin Arrival, Howth Cliff Walk & Temple Bar NightsOur trip began with a laugh — Connor somehow thought three carry-on bags would sneak past the airline staff. It didn’t. By the time we landed in Dublin, we already had our first family travel story.
To fight jet lag, we headed straight for fresh air and sea views on the Howth Cliff Walk, just outside Dublin. Crashing waves, seabirds, and colorful fishing boats in the harbor gave us our first taste of Ireland’s beauty.

Back in the city, we toured the Guinness Storehouse Experience, where seven floors of brewing history end with a perfectly poured pint at the Gravity Bar, overlooking Dublin.

Dinner was at SOLE Seafood & Grill, where the seafood tower nearly toppled us. Afterward, we joined the crowds in Temple Bar. Whiskey tastings, live music, and even some karaoke — it was a raucous, unforgettable first night.
Pro Tip: Temple Bar is fun for the atmosphere, but try a neighborhood pub like The Brazen Head (Ireland’s oldest) for a more authentic pint.
